A beautiful and substantial example of antique pyrography (decorative wood-burning art) from the Edwardian era — a long, elegant glove box covered in intricate hand-burned floral and foliate designs in the unmistakable Art Nouveau style. The entire surface is meticulously hand-burned with naturalistic blooms, scrolling leaves, and trailing tendrils, all set against a densely cross-hatched scorched background that creates striking contrast and demonstrates the labor-intensive craftsmanship of the era. The original brass scrollwork latch and hinges remain intact, as does the breathtaking original ruched pink silk interior lining — a feature that rarely survives a century of handling.

Pyrography became a popular decorative hobby during the period of 1870 to 1930, originally from Flanders, where it took on new life for the Victorians and Edwardians. A major center of production was the Flemish Art Company factory in Brooklyn, New York, where workers stamped pre-designed patterns onto wood blanks that hobbyists or factory artists would then burn by hand. Common forms included long narrow boxes labeled for gloves, handkerchiefs, ribbon, ties, and hose — making this elongated glove box a textbook example of the form.

A glove box of this length was specifically designed to hold long ladies' evening gloves — the kind worn to opera, formal dinners, and society events of the early 20th century.

This works beautifully as a vanity or dresser display piece, jewelry storage, a desk organizer for pens and letter openers, a vintage wedding ring keepsake box, or simply as a sculptural object that brings authentic Edwardian elegance to a shelf or side table.

    • Antique pyrography (hand-burned wood) decoration
  • Art Nouveau floral and foliate design
